On the evening of 14 Mar 17, JRCC Australia detected a 406 MHz distress beacon registered to a 6.15 metre recreational vessel with 2 persons on board in vicinity of Otter Reef.

A passing crew of Crown-of-Thorns starfish (COTS) control divers was diverted to their rescue, while in the course of their duties of monitoring the reef for the coral-hungry sea creatures.

The pair of fishermen were rescued from their overturned boat and treated for shock.

"This is not the first emergency we have responded to, and won't be the last," said the control-program project manager.

"Luckily, we are always prepared for such emergencies with very highly trained crews who are always prepared for such events."
