A couple’s snowmobile north of Nome, Alaska became severely buried in deep snow and they were unable to continue on, so they initiated their personal locator beacon.

A Black Hawk helicopter with a paramedic on board responded to the request from the Alaska RCC, which recommends that people take a personal locator beacon with them when traveling into the wilderness, even on short outings.

The activation of a personal locator beacon can immediately gain the attention of the RCC, which would then be able to communicate with responders, within minutes, about the beacon’s location.
